He was knighted in , created Baron Verulam in , and created Viscount St Albans in ; both peerage titles becoming extinct upon his death. He began his professional life as a lawyer, but he has become best known as an philosophical advocate and defender of the scientific revolution. His works establish and popularize an inductive methodology for scientific inquiry, often called the Baconian method. Induction implies drawing knowledge from the natural world through experimentation, observation, and testing of hypotheses.

From the mids he mainly produced portraits of friends, either as single, diptych or triptych panels. Following the death of his lover George Dyer in (memorialised in his Black Triptychs, and a number of posthumous portraits) his art became more sombre, inward-looking and preoccupied with the passage of time and death. Despite his bleak outlook, Bacon was charismatic, articulate and well-read.
